What Is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the therapeutic application of heat to specific acupuncture points or areas of the body. The heat originates from the burning of a dried herb called mugwort (artemisia vulgaris), known as moxa.
Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years. In fact, the Chinese symbol or character for acupuncture, translated literally, means acupuncture-moxibustion.
This gentle, warming therapy has been used for thousands of years and can stimulate circulation, strengthen the body’s vital energy (known as qi, which is pronounced ‘chee’), and may promote healing.
About Moxibustion
In the philosophy of Chinese medicine, warmth is considered essential for optimal physical function and vibrant health. It helps ensure that energy and blood flow smoothly throughout your body’s intricate network of meridians.
Conversely, when your body experiences cold or stagnation, this vital movement can slow, potentially leading to discomfort such as pain, persistent fatigue, and even illness. The idea with moxibustion is to deliver penetrating warmth directly to these acupuncture points and meridians, which can help to dispel cold and invigorate your body’s natural healing processes.
Moxibustion works by warming the various meridians and acupuncture points on the physical body, which in turn can help with:
- Enhancing Circulation & Pain Relief: Promotes healthy blood flow, which can significantly reduce muscle tension and alleviate various types of pain.
- Immune System Support: Boosts your body’s natural defences, aiding in recovery from illness and strengthening overall resilience.
- Digestive Comfort & Menstrual Health: Can soothe digestive discomforts and help regulate menstrual cycles, bringing balance and ease.
- Increased Energy & Vitality: Reinvigorates your vital energy, helping to combat fatigue and restore a sense of well-being and dynamism
Moxibustion in a Treatment Session
At The Dispensary™, moxibustion is often used alongside acupuncture, cupping, or herbal medicine as part of an integrated treatment plan to suit your unique needs and address the specific issues you are facing. As your practitioner, I may apply moxa in one of several ways:
- Direct moxa: A small cone of moxa is placed on the skin at a specific acupuncture point and removed before it becomes hot.
- Indirect moxa: A lit moxa stick is held at a distance to the skin, either above an acupoint, along an acupuncture channel, or region of the body, to gently warm the area.
- A moxa “roll” may also be wrapped around an acupuncture needle that has already been inserted into an acupoint.
Each application of moxa is tailored to your individual diagnosis and comfort level. Many clients at The Dispensary™ describe moxibustion as deeply relaxing and profoundly soothing, leaving them with a lasting sense of warmth, vitality, and inner peace.
